Bench powers Jackson State past FAMU

The Jackson State women’s basketball team got a 24-point performance from the bench on the way to a 79-60 win against the Florida A&M Rattlers on the road Monday. The Tigers improve to a perfect 7-0 in conference play.

Angel Jackson led the Tigers’ offense with 18 points while adding five rebounds, two blocks, and a steal. JSU had three more players score in double figures as Andriana Avent tacked on 11 points off the bench and Miya Crump chipped in as well with 11 points and eight rebounds

Led by Ja’Leah Hickmon’s three offensive rebounds, Jackson State pulled down 14 boards that resulted in nine second-chance points.

The Jackson State defense forced 16 FAMU turnovers while committing 12. Those takeaways turned into 20 points on the offensive end of the floor. 

How It Happened

• Jackson State (12-6, 7-0 SWAC) got off to a 9-8 advantage to open the game.
• JSU then went on a 6-0 run with 5:48 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Avent, to increase its lead to 15-8.
• The Tigers lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 22-17 advantage.
• Florida A&M (4-14, 3-4 SWAC) rallied to take a 27-23 lead before Jackson State went on a 6-0 run starting at the 4:58 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Avent, to take a 29-27 lead.
• The Rattlers then came roaring back to take a 32-31 lead heading into halftime.
• Jackson State came out of halftime rallying to a 42-40 lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Avent, to expand its lead further to 48-40 with 2:54 to go in the third.
• Before the conclusion of the third period, the Rattlers had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Tigers still entered the fourth quarter with a 56-50 edge.
• JSU took advantage of four Florida A&M turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of takeaways.
• The Tigers kept widening that lead, expanding it to 60-52 before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Madison Roshelle’s jumper, to grow the lead to 69-52 with 6:06 to go in the contest.
• Jackson State kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 79-60 win. 

Inside the Numbers

• Jackson State shot 27-for-56 (48.2 percent) from the field and 62.5 percent (20-for-32) from the free throw line.
• The Tigers finished with 32 points in the paint, 24 bench points, 20 points off of 16 FAMU turnovers, nine second-chance points and eight fast break points.
• Florida A&M shot 38.5 percent (20-for-52) from the field and 83.3 percent (15-for-18) from the free-throw line.
• Ahriahna Grizzle finished with 29 points, five rebounds, and three steals for FAMU.
• Olivia Delancy registered 20 points and Ivet Subirats had 11 points.
• The Rattlers finished with 22 points in the paint, 14 points off of 12 JSU turnovers, 10 second chance points, and five fast break points.
